The Rays chased Houston ace Justin Verlander in the fourth inning of ALDS Game 4 at Tropicana Field, and they presently hold a 4-0 lead. Verlander, pitching on short rest, was nothing close to himself in terms of command and stuff. Tommy Pham homered as part of a three-run first, and a Willy Adames homer in the fourth followed by a walk to Ji-Man Choi ended Verlander’s night. He was replaced by Josh James, who had warmed up multiple times in the early innings.
Verlander lasted just 3 2/3 innings, and over that brief span he allowed seven hits and four earned runs. Along the way he struck out five and walked two, and the Rays worked him for 84 pitches.
The Astros lead the best-of-five series 2-1, so like Game 3 this is an elimination game for the Rays. They’re trying to force a decisive Game 5 back in Houston on Thursday. As for the Astros, they’re trying to secure a berth opposite the Yankees in the ALCS.
